UNDERSTANDING THE HEALTH ISSUES OF INSTITUTIONALIZED ELDERLY WOMEN IN DELHI

Abstract

Life expectancy has increased dramatically in the twentieth century. The world has witnessed an increase in longevity over a substantially long period of time. This increased life expectancy rate has brought with it new challenges in this millennium. We now have a large elderly population, resulting in more dependants as the population gets older. Due to the current living conditions, the number of institutionalized elderly persons has been growing considerably. The opportunities of an active life offered by institutions are very restrictive. The lack of physical stimulation in institutional care systems increases the probability of health and functional disorders in elderly population especially for elderly women, thus affecting their health related quality of life.
