THEATRE AND THEATRICALITY OF BECKETT

Abstract

A distance from worldly reality is inherent in theatre which makes it art. This is a distance of codes and conventions as something is being mediated through these codes and conventions. But this mediation is unacknowledged in the traditional realistic forms of theatre. In fact, every effort is made to conceal this mediation and make it look as if it were a natural reflection of reality. But works of certain dramatists turn on themselves and speak about their conventions and presuppositions and make strange their own formal devices. Beckett is one of those dramatists who make us aware of the fact that it is a piece of theatre. His plays are a comment upon theatre, and challenge the traditional contract between the play and spectator or text and reader. In this way they make one question one’s beliefs and certainties. They reveal sharply to one that one had been accepting certain conventions and truths without considering their arbitrary nature. One may describe Beckett's plays as being meta theatrical. One is again and again forcibly reminded that one is being confronted by pieces of theatre. ‘Willing suspension of disbelief’ becomes impossible. Instead of identifying with the characters and situations one seeks to understand what the plays mean and how the reality they are referring to can acquire entirely different meanings when seen from new perspectives.
