Indian diasporic writing made its landmark entry with the writings of Salman Rushdie, V.S. Naipaul, Bharati Mukherjee, Vikram Chandra, Amitav Ghosh, Vikram Seth, Sunetra Gupta, Rohinton Mistry, and Hari Kunzru who have all made their names while residing abroad. One of the important aspects of these writers is that they write predominantly the experiences of migration. They have given more poignancy to the exploration by dealing not only with a geographical dislocation but also a socio-cultural sensibility to their homeland. Jhumpa Lahiri is one of the most eminent and accomplished writers of Indian Diaspora. She occupies a significant place in world literature. Her works deal with the themes of immigration, displacement, loss of identity, clash of cultures, emotional complexes, human relations and communication barriers. In the present paper, four short stories from the collection Interpreter of Maladies (1999) are considered for analyzing her sensibility towards India and Indianness. The significance of the work as diasporic short story collection lies precisely in the author’s attempt to exploit the underlying tension when one lives between two worlds and two cultures.

How far sociology is able to provide an understanding about the formation of new structures and cultural transformation of present societies assumes importance in the context of environmental agendas. Environmental problems which mankind is facing in present time at global level such as global warming, deforestation, desertification, loss of biodiversity and genetic engineering seriously draw and force our attention in rethinking the relations between nature, environment and society which has both academic and practical significance. Emergence of environmental ideology and environmental activism mark significant shift in human reflexivity towards his own foundational base of existence that is Earth. This paper examines Human Ecology, Deep ecology and Eco feminism as environmental philosophies which Environmental philosophies examined in this paper show that domination of nature and domination of humans by humans are coterminous. Domination of nature by humans makes him insensitive to the interconnections between nature and humans. Environmental philosophies makes us sensitive by drawing our attention to the fact that metabolism of earth is connected to the metabolism of human beings. How far sociology has given due attention and integrated the views of such environmental philosophies is a larger debatable question. The rising environmental ideologies and their ramifications on sociological knowledge is a debatable matter. But it is undoubtedly agreed that mainstream sociology has largely neglected the domain of environment as a variable in constitution and understanding the interfaces of society. This has roots in European enlightenment and positivistic orientation of sociology.

Abstract

Modern India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Excavations in the Indus Valley trace civilization there back for at least 5,000 years. India's cultural history includes prehistoric mountain cave paintings in Ajanta, the exquisite beauty of the Taj Mahal in Agra, the rare sensitivity and warm emotions of the erotic Hindu temple sculptures of the 9th-century Chandella rulers, and the Kutab Minar in Delhi. The seeming contradictions of Indian attitudes towards sex can be best explained through the context of history. India played a significant role in the history of sex, from writing the first literature that treated sexual intercourse as a science, to in modern times being the origin of the philosophical focus of new-age groups’ attitudes on sex.

This is a comprehensive study of English as a second language in government and private schools. A total of 280 self made questionnaires were prepared and circulated among the students and the teachers in the two school situations and also collected the data by survey method (interview). The result shows that the government-school teachers have an edge over the private-school teachers in many respects such as their qualification, training and teaching experience. But ironically the results of the latter are more encouraging than the former. Both the categories of teachers are largely dissatisfied with the prescribed syllabus of English at the primary level, because of its many drawbacks, even though the private-school teachers are not as much discontented as the government-school teachers are. The available infrastructure of the private schools is much better than that of the government schools. As far as teaching/learning aids are concerned, the latter lack these facilities, while the private-school situation with regard to the facilities is more or less better. The students of private schools enjoy a rare advantage over their counterparts of the government schools in the form of more learning years in their pre-primary (Nursery) classes, an educational system which is not strictly in place in the government schools. The Nursery classes in the latter are completely disordered.

Climate change and agriculture are interrelated processes, both of which take place on a global scale. Climate change affects agriculture in a number of ways, including through changes in average temperatures, rainfall, and climate extremes (e.g., heat waves); changes in pests and diseases; changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide and ground-level ozone concentrations; changes in the nutritional quality of some foods; and changes in sea level. Climate change is already affecting agriculture, with effects unevenly distributed across the world. Future climate change will likely negatively affect crop production in low latitude countries, while effects in northern latitudes may be positive or negative. Climate change will probably increase the risk of food insecurity for some vulnerable groups, such as the poor.

Abstract

A distance from worldly reality is inherent in theatre which makes it art. This is a distance of codes and conventions as something is being mediated through these codes and conventions. But this mediation is unacknowledged in the traditional realistic forms of theatre. In fact, every effort is made to conceal this mediation and make it look as if it were a natural reflection of reality. But works of certain dramatists turn on themselves and speak about their conventions and presuppositions and make strange their own formal devices. Beckett is one of those dramatists who make us aware of the fact that it is a piece of theatre. His plays are a comment upon theatre, and challenge the traditional contract between the play and spectator or text and reader. In this way they make one question one’s beliefs and certainties. They reveal sharply to one that one had been accepting certain conventions and truths without considering their arbitrary nature. One may describe Beckett's plays as being meta theatrical. One is again and again forcibly reminded that one is being confronted by pieces of theatre. ‘Willing suspension of disbelief’ becomes impossible. Instead of identifying with the characters and situations one seeks to understand what the plays mean and how the reality they are referring to can acquire entirely different meanings when seen from new perspectives.
