Abstract

Young children should be introduced to the value of physical activity and the benefits of regular and moderate exercise. Through play and games, they are physically active and realise that games and activities contribute to personal enjoyment and the formation of positive relationships with others. Skills for physical activity are acquired developmentally, with fundamental movement skills providing the foundation for complex movement patterns and for more advanced activities. The emphasis during the early years of schooling should be on regular participation in cooperative, rather than competitive, physical activity.
