Abstract

Today higher educational institutions namely colleges and universities employ public relation officers to carry out the communication tasks. Yet the public relations function in higher educational institutions is not well defined, predominantly owing to the widespread misconception about their roles and responsibilities which contribute to the health of the institution (Anctil, 2003; Lewison & Hawes, 2007). This article presents an overview of the need for public relation officer, their roles and responsibilities in the broader sense and their specific roles in higher educational institutions. An attempt has also been made to provide insights into the key factors and challenges in establishing a successful partnership between communities and universities through public relations functions.
