Abstract

Many potential sources of trauma exist in contemporary society. Individuals exposed to traumatic events such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, fires, explosions or other terrifying experiences are likely to develop post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This paper presents an overview of the ‘disaster syndrome’ – symptoms of post disaster psychological disorders. Further, the role of immediate crises intervention, telephone hot line counselling and debriefing programs in psychological rehabilitation of the survivors of disasters, is discussed. Supportive therapy, psychopharmacotherapy and direct therapeutic exposure techniques are highlighted for effective dealing of anxiety following traumatic disaster.
