Abstract

The aim of this paper is to trace the role of cinema as a significant tool of discursive formation, to explore films as constitutive sites of politics, and to analyse the representation of dominant statist knowledge through films. The paper will engage with these questions by using the lens of Ontological Security Theory to find dominant elements of the Indian as well as the Pakistani identity. It is for this purpose that the paper explores mainstream Hindi films wherein a significant portion of the narrative revolves around the dynamics between India and Pakistan with respect to the themes of war and terrorism, with Pakistan mainly being portrayed as the ‘other’ or the enemy. The focus will be on identifying the religious and nationalistic ideology that these films evoke and the extent to which the Hindutva politics, Diaspora politics and the Indo-Pak relations have determined or impacted the ideological leanings of these films. To further establish the inter-textuality between politics and popular culture, the paper would pay a keen attention to how the changing political dynamics between the two countries impacted the cinematic articulation and portrayal of Pakistan or the ‘other’ in these films.

Developing country like India needs to consume more energy to ensure their economic growth. Rapidly increasing energy demand and growing concern about economic and environmental consequences call for effective and thorough energy governance in India. Today, India is mostly relying on the thermal energy but other forms of energy like Solar, Wind etc., are fast on rise. Renewable Energy (RE) is accepted as a key source for the future, not only for the world, but also for India. According to clean energy mission of India, country aims to double its renewable energy capacity from 25,000MW in 2012 to 55,000MW by 2017.The urgency of this decision is due to scarcity of fossil fuel faced by the nation clubbed with the alarming rise of CO2 emissions. As of now, the renewable energy accounts for around 13 per cent of total installed capacity, with the largest share from wind energy which stands at around 70 per cent. There are two forces that will drive the growth of wind energy in India. One is the rising energy demand in India and the other is obligations on India’s part to encourage clean development. share of renewable energy in the country’s total energy mix rising from 7.8% in the financial year 2008 to 12.3% in the financial year 2013. India had about 28.7 GW of installed renewable energy capacity as on December 2013. Wind accounts for 69% of the capacity, with 19.3 GW of installed capacity, making India the world’s fifth largest wind energy producer. Due to hurdles investors are not coming forward to invest in wind energy. In the present scenario, Wind energy is techno-economically viable efficient alternative to fossil fuel, due to its zero emission factor and non pollutant nature, as in power generation process it does not emit greenhouse gases.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's luminous and formidable talent was first seen in Purple Hibiscus, her 2004 novel about a childhood devastated by a religious patriarch, which won a Commonwealth writers' prize and was shortlisted for the Orange prize. Her second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, takes its title from the emblem for Biafra, the breakaway state in eastern Nigeria that survived for only three years, and whose name became a global byword for war by starvation. Adichie's powerful focus on war's impact on civilian life, and the trauma beyond the trenches, earns this novel a place alongside such works as Pat Barker's Regeneration trilogy and Helen Dunmore's depiction of the Leningrad blockade, The Siege.
