This paper is an attempt to reflect on the concept of subaltern in post colonial era. We know that the evils of caste discrimination are deeply rooted in Indian social structure. This has been pointed out time and again by many social reformers, scholars and writers. This paper will focus on the efforts of Mahatma Phule and Valmiki in the depiction of the deplorable condition of lower caste or underprivileged marginalised Indians in order to bring them into the main stream society. I have also tried to examine the various phases of Dalit’s movement and their representation in Indian social scenario as well as the impact of such a movement on the current social structure. However, in the process it is explored that the problem of caste ridden society still prevails even after our being self proclaimed progressive in every field of life and it needs to be addressed adequately in academic studies.

Abstract

Career growth and work-life balance are the two most important factors for the under-30s who constitute one third of the Indian workforce, quite different from the older generations that placed emphasis on loyalty, job security or rewards. Getting the right work-life balance is something many of us struggle with. It requires a combination of discipline, diplomacy and juggling. Everyone is different and you really just have to find what works for you. For me, it starts with setting boundaries and protecting some personal time each week. This article discusses the development of the concept of the ‘work-life balance’ as a means of tackling the problem of increasing amounts of stress in the work-place as people try to juggle a wide range of factors in their life/work environment, including: work; family; friends; health; and spirit/self. It is argued that, of the factors involved, work is the one which is most elastic and can be managed in such a way as to avoiding jeopardizing the other factors.

Abstract

John Updike, the two times Pulitzer winner novelist has been accused of giving a marginalized status to his female characters. He did not give insight into the female characters and they were not treated as thinking animals but exist only to fulfill man’s physical needs. Updike was a Barthian and his views on the existence of women seem to be inspired by him. Yet his novels also depicted some strong female characters. The present paper analyzes the appropriateness of the charge of misogynist that was attributed against him. The study is done on his famous novels Rabbit, Run, Couples, and Of the Farm, with a passing reference on Rabbit Redux and Marry Me. The leader of second wave feminism in America Betty Friedan’s revolutionary work Feminine Mystique has been taken as a touchstone to judge the appropriateness of the charge against Updike.

Mughal historiography has seen some fruitful engagements on the process of the Mughal patronage to Brajbhasha poets at imperial and sub imperial level. Similarly, why Mughal Persian poets of repute were composing some part of their literary work in the vernacular like Braj Bhasha or Awadhi has been looked afresh in recent scholarship. Broadly speaking, all these intellectual engagements while trying to answer some specific questions regarding use of vernacular for literary composition in the Mughal world also offered a particular model to explain the complex cultural process of Vernacularization of the Mughal literary culture in the late seventeenth and eighteenth century earlier marked by the dominance of Persian literature and literati. Other scholarly attempt had directly engaged with the question of cosmopolitan and vernacular and tried to explore how vernaculars replaced Persian, the cosmopolitan language and emerged as languages of power in the late 18th century by linking political changes with developments in the literary field which again can be accommodated in the umbrella framework of vernacularization of Mughal literary culture.

This case study begins by describing the importance of the agricultural sector in India. It provides a brief background to the rationale for undertaking the Green Revolution and the various kinds of changes that took place for the Green Revolution to be successful. Despite the successful rise in food grain production, agricultural growth rates in the ninth and tenth five year plans have not been up to expectations. Further, when compared to its neighboring countries, India's performance in the agricultural sector has been far from satisfactory. The time has come for a second Green Revolution. There are certain critical elements that are required for the Green Revolution to take place, both in terms of technology usage and issues to be considered. Further, India's Food Processing Industry is at a fairly nascent stage and needs to develop rapidly in order to reduce wastage of food crops, fruits and vegetables, and help agricultural labor find new employment opportunities through which productivity can improve.

The Companies Act 2013 has been recently passed in August, 2013 to replace the old Companies Act, 1956. The law passed contains a clause which has made corporate spending on social welfare as mandatory. Corporate Social Responsibility as a concept has really come of age in the last decade. Though there was considerable opposition by the corporate sector and industry chambers against the move, the government decided to go ahead with the proposal anyway. The move by the government has seen its fair share of bouquets as well as brickbats but constructive debate regarding the move has been missing. This paper aims to properly introduce Clause 135 of the Companies Act, 2013 discussing in detail the various arguments in favour as well as against the clause. An attempt has also been made to chart the road ahead for mandatory corporate social responsibility in India.

The history of Disability takes us as back as to the early civilizations, where Ancient Greeks had antipathy towards those with bodies that were ‘atypical’ according to their community. Towards the middle ages, there was the growth of faith based religious institutions with a charity approach to individuals who were ‘atypical’. Then in the era of Enlightment, disability was understood through scientific knowledge. Disability and the Disability studies in 21st century gained the attention of the academicians, activists and other social scientists. Disability is no more confined to the domains of rehabilitation professionals, therapeutic institutions functioning under the bureaucratic regime; rather it has shifted to the change among the differently abled people’s identity, their increased participation and the institutional sensitivity towards the barrier of exclusion of the disabled. But ‘Disability’ as a concept and the life of the impaired is always subject to vary from place to place depending upon the socio-cultural aspects.

Abstract

Positivism as a method of enquiry relies upon the scientific methodological principles of empirical observation, deductive reasoning, and formulation of laws or universal generalizations. Enlightenment brought about a new age of reason, objectivity and criticality. The enlightenment witnessed a period of spectacular triumphs in the natural sciences. The success did not go unnoticed in the social sciences. Rather, as many commentators have noted, the social sciences were born in the shadow of these triumphs. Furthermore, the methodological lessons that the natural sciences were teaching seemed to be very clear: if the methods of the natural science are strictly adhered to, then the spectacular success of these sciences could be matched in the social sciences. The social sciences had only to await the arrival of their Newton (Hekman). Positivism was thus an inevitable consequence of science.

Royal treasury or Rajkosha has been considered of the utter importance in Arthasastra by Kautilya. Kautilya has stated that it should be flooding. He proposes various methods to replenish the Rajkosha. He proposes to establish new Janapadas or colonies to increase land revenue. But his idea to establish a Janapadas is not objected only for revenue. He asks the king to settle Shudras in those colonies in large number. After getting the land converted in to arable, he recommends to allot it to Brahmins. These Brahmins were provided a revenue free land. He also prohibits entry of hermits belonging to non-Brahmins. He also established laws favoring the spread of Brahmin culture and restricting non-Brahmin ideology. It appears as if he was creating a cultural colony of Brahmin ideology and culture. It is interesting to see whether his policy was supported by the king like Chandragupta Maurya, who himself don’t seem to have been follower of Brahmanism. Kautiya’s intentions have been discussed in the present thesis.
